M6 MacBook Pro vs OLED Touchscreen MacBook Pro: Price, Specs and Release Date

Updated October 28: Apple now sells two new MacBook Pros. The 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 with the familiar design. The new OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro (“PROLED XDR”) starts at $2,899 (14-inch) and $3,399 (16-inch) with M5 Pro or M5 Max. Both can be pre-ordered now and ship November 6.

Apple launched two MacBook Pros in two days. First came the 14-inch M6 model, then at its “Pro and Tell” event in Los Angeles Apple unveiled the first touchscreen Mac.

Before the event, Apple quietly launched its next laptop. The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 keeps the familiar design and the $1,999 starting price, but brings a faster chip, Wi-Fi 7 and better external display support. A day later, Apple confirmed the redesigned OLED touchscreen model. Here is everything you need to know about both, and which one to buy.

  • Touch in macOS: you can tap, scroll and pinch to zoom directly on the screen, and macOS translates touches into clicks so many apps work right away. Touch updates for Microsoft Office, Adobe Lightroom and DaVinci Resolve are due later this year.
  • Dynamic Island: it replaces the notch and shows live activities and music controls, like on iPhone.
  • Base 14-inch configuration: M5 Pro with a 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

The price is in line with pre-event estimates of $2,799 to $2,999 for the 14-inch model. Read our full guide: Touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro: price, specs and release date.

Also Announced: iPad mini 8 and M6 iMac

  • iPad mini 8: OLED screen, A20 Pro chip, IP67 water resistance, Wi-Fi 7 and a thinner 5.4 mm body. It starts at $699, with pre-orders on October 28.
  • iMac with M6: 24-inch 4.5K display in seven colors, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet on the base model. It starts at $1,499, with pre-orders on October 28.

M6 or OLED MacBook Pro: Which Should You Buy?

  • Buy the M6 model if you want a fast, proven laptop at $1,999 and do not care about touch. It is a meaningful upgrade over M3 and older Macs.
  • Skip it if you have an M5 MacBook Pro. The jump is real but not big enough to justify switching.
  • Get the OLED model if you want touch, the brighter tandem OLED screen, a lighter body and M5 Pro or M5 Max power, and the $900 extra fits your budget.
  • Consider the price gap: at $1,999 versus $2,899, the M6 model is the better value for most people.
