What refresh rate is your screen really running at? This free refresh rate test measures your monitor in hertz (Hz) directly in the browser in about 2 seconds, and shows a live animation so you can see the difference between 60, 30 and 15 frames per second.
The green square moves every frame your screen shows. Compare it with the yellow and red squares: the smoother the green one looks, the higher your refresh rate.
How the Refresh Rate Test Works
Your browser draws a new frame every time your screen refreshes. The test measures the time between frames for a couple of seconds and calculates the refresh rate from the median frame time. For example, 16.7 ms per frame means 60 Hz, 6.9 ms means 144 Hz and 4.2 ms means 240 Hz.
Common Refresh Rates
| Refresh rate | Frame time | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 60 Hz | 16.7 ms | Office monitors, most laptops |
| 75 Hz | 13.3 ms | Budget monitors |
| 120 Hz | 8.3 ms | Phones, TVs, gaming laptops |
| 144 Hz | 6.9 ms | Gaming monitors |
| 165 Hz | 6.1 ms | Gaming monitors |
| 240 Hz | 4.2 ms | Competitive gaming |
My 144 Hz Monitor Shows 60 Hz. Why?
- Windows: Settings → System → Display → Advanced display → Choose a refresh rate.
- macOS: System Settings → Displays → Refresh rate.
- Cable: use DisplayPort or a recent HDMI cable. Old HDMI cables often limit you to 60 Hz.
- Power saving: some laptops drop to 60 Hz on battery.
- Browser: close other heavy tabs and make sure hardware acceleration is on.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my monitor refresh rate?
Open this page and wait about 2 seconds. The test shows the refresh rate your browser is actually getting. You can also check it in your operating system display settings.
Is the browser refresh rate test accurate?
Yes, usually within 1 Hz. If your computer is busy, a few frames may be dropped, so run it again with other tabs closed.
Is 60 Hz good enough?
For office work and video, yes. For gaming, 120 Hz or more feels much smoother and can make you react faster.
Why does my phone show 60 Hz when it supports 120 Hz?
Many phones lower the refresh rate in the browser or in battery saver mode to save power.
