How to Play This Hacker Idle Game

  1. First, click the big HACK button, or press Space, to harvest your first bytes of data.
  2. Then, spend data on Programs. Each one harvests data every second, even while you are away.
  3. Next, open Upgrades to make your clicks and programs much stronger.
  4. After that, unlock Achievements as you reach new milestones.
  5. Keep an eye out for golden packets. They pop up at random for a few seconds. Click one for a data jackpot, a 7x production frenzy or an overclock that makes every hack 15 times stronger.
  6. Finally, when the game slows down, Go dark: reset your run and earn reputation, which boosts everything by 10% per point, forever.

What Is an Idle Game?

An idle game, also called an incremental game, is a game where numbers grow even when you stop playing. You start by clicking, then you buy things that click for you, and soon your production grows exponentially. As a result, every visit feels like progress, because your programs keep working in the background.

Root Access gives the genre a hacker theme, with a terminal interface, a fake activity log and plenty of jokes about toasters, printers and weak passwords.

Tips to Progress Faster in This Hacker Idle Game

  • Click a lot at the start. Your first programs are cheap, so a minute of clicking gets you going quickly.
  • Buy the keyboard upgrade early. Doubling your clicks for 100 B pays for itself almost instantly.
  • Watch the multiplier upgrades. Once you own 5 or 25 of a program, a new upgrade appears that doubles or triples it.
  • Come back later. While you are away, your programs keep harvesting data for up to 8 hours.
  • Go dark at the right time. Your first reset is worth it once you can earn 2 or 3 reputation points. After that, every run is much faster.

All the Programs

As you progress through the hacker idle game, you unlock ten programs, each one about ten times stronger than the last:

  • Bash script
  • Script kiddie
  • Toaster botnet
  • Proxy chain
  • Phishing farm (for fictional banks only)
  • Zero-day lab
  • Satellite uplink
  • Rogue AI
  • Quantum cracker
  • The Mainframe

Data is measured like real storage, from bytes and kilobytes all the way to petabytes and beyond. Can you reach your first exabyte?
