How the Reaction Time Test Works

Each round starts with a red box. After a random delay between about 1.5 and 4.5 seconds, the box turns green and the clock starts. Your reaction time is the time between the color change and your click. The test averages five rounds, because a single round can be lucky or unlucky. Clicking too early does not count, so you cannot cheat by guessing.

Average Reaction Time by Level

Average timeLevel
Under 180 ms⚡ Lightning reflexes
180 to 215 ms🎯 Excellent
215 to 250 ms👍 Above average
250 to 290 ms🙂 Average
290 to 350 ms🐢 A little slow
Over 350 ms😴 Sleepy or slow device

These ranges are for a simple visual test with a mouse. Your result also includes the delay of your screen, mouse and browser, which is usually 10 to 50 ms. That is why the same person can score differently on two devices.

How to Improve Your Reaction Time

  • Sleep well. Tiredness is the biggest cause of slow reactions.
  • Stay relaxed with your finger resting lightly on the mouse button.
  • Look at the center of the box, not at the edges.
  • Practice with games that need quick responses, such as rhythm or action games.
  • Use a wired mouse and a fast screen for your best result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good reaction time?

For a visual test like this one, the average human reaction time is about 250 to 280 milliseconds. Under 220 ms is good, and under 180 ms is excellent.

Why is my reaction time slower on a phone?

Touch screens and some displays add delay before your tap is registered. A wired mouse and a fast monitor usually give the most accurate result.

Can I improve my reaction time?

Yes, a little. Sleep, focus and practice all help, and fast-paced games can improve how quickly you respond to visual signals. Caffeine may help slightly in the short term.

Why does the test say “Too early”?

The green screen appears after a random delay so you cannot predict it. If you click while it is still red, the round does not count and you can retry it.

Does age affect reaction time?

Yes. Reaction time is usually fastest in the late teens and twenties and slowly gets longer with age, although practice and fitness reduce the effect.
