Keyboard Tester

Check that every key on your keyboard works with this free keyboard tester. Press each key and it lights up on the virtual keyboard, so you can quickly spot keys that are broken, sticky or not registering. It also shows the key name, the code and the keyCode that your browser receives, which is handy for developers.

How to Test Your Keyboard

Click anywhere on this page, then press every key one by one. Each key that works turns green. When you finish, any key that is still grey did not send a signal, which usually means it is broken, dirty or disabled. Press several keys at the same time to check ghosting: if some of them do not light up together, your keyboard has a limited key rollover.

What If a Key Does Not Work?

  • Clean it: turn the keyboard off, remove crumbs with compressed air and gently clean around the key.
  • Try another USB port or cable, or recharge it if it is wireless.
  • Check the layout: a wrong keyboard language in Windows or macOS can make keys type different characters.
  • Update or reinstall the driver in Device Manager on Windows.
  • Test on another computer. If the same key fails there, the hardware is faulty.

Keys Your Browser Cannot Detect

Some keys are handled by the operating system before the browser sees them, such as Fn, Print Screen on some systems, media keys and the Windows key in certain combinations. If only those keys stay grey, your keyboard is probably fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my keyboard is broken?

Press every key in this tester. Keys that never turn green are not sending a signal. If the same keys fail on another computer too, the keyboard itself is faulty.

What is keyboard ghosting?

Ghosting is when a keyboard cannot register several keys pressed at the same time. Gaming keyboards with N-key rollover avoid it. Press 3 to 6 keys together here to check.

Does this keyboard test work on a laptop?

Yes. It works with laptop, USB, Bluetooth and mechanical keyboards in any modern browser.

Why does the Fn key not light up?

The Fn key is handled inside the keyboard and never reaches the computer, so no website can detect it.
