How to Test Your Webcam
Click Start webcam test and allow camera access. If you see yourself, the camera works. The panel below shows the real resolution (for example 1280×720 or 1920×1080) and the measured frames per second. If you have more than one camera, choose it from the list.
Webcam Not Working? Try This
- Allow access in the browser: click the lock or camera icon in the address bar.
- Close other apps that may be using the camera, like Zoom, Teams, Discord or OBS.
- Check the privacy shutter or the camera key on your laptop keyboard.
- Windows privacy settings: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, and turn on camera access.
- Try another USB port and restart your browser.
What Is a Good Webcam Resolution?
| Resolution | Name | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 640×480 | VGA | Very basic calls |
| 1280×720 | HD / 720p | Most video calls |
| 1920×1080 | Full HD / 1080p | Streaming and clear calls |
| 3840×2160 | 4K | Content creation |
Frame rate matters too: 30 fps is standard for calls, and 60 fps looks smoother for streaming. Low light often makes webcams drop to 15 fps, so add light in front of you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I test my webcam online?
Open this page, click Start webcam test and allow access. If you see your image, your webcam works. The tool also shows its resolution and frame rate.
Why is my webcam image black?
Another app may be using the camera, a privacy shutter may be closed, or access may be blocked in your system privacy settings.
Is this webcam test private?
Yes. The video is only shown in your browser. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.
Why is my webcam frame rate low?
Low light is the most common reason: many webcams lower their frame rate to get a brighter image. Turn on a lamp in front of you and test again.
